TEST DRIVE MEME!

WHAT HAPPENS IN SPACE VEGAS STAYS IN SPACE VEGAS

The ship has made a stop at a city-planet to acquire some supplies-- and just everyone's luck, it's one of those wonderful mostly-lawless places where you can do or get pretty much anything. About the only thing the local government seems to frown on is outright murder, though it's quickly apparent that most of the planet's places of business include some rather heavily-armed security to deter thieves and other ne'er-do-wells. Still, it's a chance to get away from the zombies and breathe some non-recycled atmosphere for a while...

Scenarios:

#1: Screw that, I'm staying on board.

Just what it says on the tin. Your character has some plans now that the ship's mostly cleared of both unwilling passengers and zombies.. the Master might even be away! Time for a little reconnaissance behind locked doors?

#2: All work and no play makes Jack something something.

Unhappily for you, you were given a mission on-planet that you should probably try to complete before you go have fun... well, unless you want to get your air supply cut off or any of another thousand yucky things. Thankfully, you just have to pick up that really big palette of mysterious crates watched over by those really big unsmiling dudes.. or was it that other big stack of crates?

#3: Well it's not technically illegal.

There's something on-planet-- money, technology, shinies, whatever your character's heart desires. Only problem is, you can't seem to acquire it by normal economic activities. Ocean's Eleven in Space, anyone?

#4: The chips are down.

It's Space Vegas. Your character is gonna go have a look at the space casinos, or take in a space MMA battle, or whatever other ridiculous thing you can think of on a planet where you can do pretty much anything you can afford... and you've got just enough in credits or barter to cash in...

#5: Wild card! Choose your own adventure!

DO

~Post a top-level comment for a character who will be NEW to the game. So, like.. everybody. If you want to.

~Make sure to label your post with your character's name and originating canon.

~Tag as if you're already stuck on this wonderful ship! Make sure to read through the game info before tagging.

~If you are really shy, try tagging one of the threads already there!

DON'T

~Walk out of the airlocks without a space suit. Jeeze.

~Taunt happy fun ball.

Have a human-looking hacking program, big guy. X3

Clu had spent most of his time on the planet just observing. Learning. And Users, was there ever a lot to learn and observe. He was starting to get a processor ache trying to deal with the massive influx of data. Everywhere there was light, noise, color, a dozen different things competing for his attention every nano. Not that it wasn't exciting and fascinating, but how did Users manage to deal with it all?

Finally, opted to retreat to a relatively dim and quiet corner to give his overloaded sensors a break. At least his clothing wouldn't draw to much attention here, so he shouldn't be bothered; compared to some of the garishly colored outfits he'd seen, his white bodysuit, boots, helm, and gauntlets looked positively plain, even laced with glowing yellow circuits as the were. Unfortunately, it seemed he wasn't the only one who'd decided to take a break in this corner, and he nearly walked into the large... User? Droid?... in his distracted state.

He sent an automatic ping of [apology] before recalling that pings didn't function here. "Sorry," he said aloud with a bit of a sigh. "Didn't see you there."

Poor Techmarine... so confused.

[personal profile] robotarmsareholy 2014-07-06 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
The Techmarine shifted his bolter some. He had been carrying it in one of his hands, ready for action. A space marine must always be prepared. He did see this... thing before him. He was confused for a myraid of moments, not sure what to make of the program. Was it a human? A mutant? A Xeno? He took a few moments to shift his head, letting his body shift towards a more ready stance. The apology though did make him realize he was one of those trapped on the ship with him.

Martellus was more soft spoken than most Space Marines (other than scout marines) but he had his moments. Here was not one of them. "Neither I you. I would appreciate your aid in recovering a piece of the Codex from the casino across from us. The Codex carries designs of Terra's ancient past, which may give myself and others an advantage against our captor, The Master. I do believe he may be a follower of Tzeentch or at least very least touched by the Dark God."

Sorry for stupidly late reply. X3

Clu recognized the large being as well once he'd taken a moment to look, though he'd only seen him in passing. The shift to a more ready stance made Clu slightly nervous, though; he was suddenly acutely aware of his lack of weaponry and the other being's abundance of it.

What the larger being had to say, though, shifted his expression from mildly nervous to intrigued. "Really? Hmmm..." He considered a moment. "Well, my large, armored friend, it just so happens that you're in luck; data retrieval happens to be one of my specialties. And while I don't know anything about any Tzeentch, I'm all for sticking it to the so-called 'Master' too."

"Anyway," he said, lowering his voice a bit to avoid attention as they got down to business, "what's this Codex piece look like? And is it purely the datafile you want, or is the storage medium necessary too?" Just the datafile would be easier, but Clu felt confident he could come up with something in either instance.

We All do it!

"Your ignorance of Tzeentch does not make you any less in danger of falling to his wiles. He is the most esoteric of the dark gods, but the most cunning too. But if you wish to fight the Master person, I think a temporary alliance may be wise. The Codex? It is required to keep the storage medium, it does not have the same format as most cogitators I am familiar with, the storage medium itself being lost in some time. Thankfully the data on them are still readable, and even corrupted data can be highly useful in at least piecing together sacred technology."

Even if there was nobody he really would trust sacred technology with.

"I can handle both brute force and technical skills, but I fear the direct approach would be suicidal."

Clu nodded. "The direct approach generally is in situations like this.", he said, crossing his arms over his chest, expression thoughtful. "And yeah, formatting issues are always a glitch. Needing the storage medium makes it a bit more complicated, but it should still be doable."

He paused, considering. "What's security like over there?", he asked. "How heavily guarded is this thing, and what obstacles can we expect?"

"And out of curiosity," Clu added, "what do you mean by 'sacred technology'? Do you mean that you view all technology as sacred, or just certain specific kinds?" It wasn't really relevant to the mission, but glitch it, Clu was curious. And a good hacker never turned down chance for fresh data.

Had to ask!

[personal profile] robotarmsareholy 2014-07-15 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
"It should be in a small unit, separate from others. I saw them put it on display, they seem to think it's just a shiny jewel. The display does use nano-binded and corrected crystals, thus its luster. During the day, it's on the casino floor, so no more guards than then, but we're liable to attract attention. Otherwise they keep it in the vault one would assume. I have no way to gather information, I'm a techmarine, not a scout."

Had to ask that question about sacred tech eh?

"Some hereteks view all technology as valuable and especially potent forms sacred, but I am firmly a proper believer. As such all human technology is sacred, at least the ones not born from madness or demons. Now, how sacred it is depends on it's value, if the technology is lost, its age, and it's purpose. While my bolter and armor are sacred, both to the Chapter and the Cult, they pale in the comparison to how sacred a Titan is. They are works of wonders, and as such must be treated with respect. The proper rituals must be obeyed, especially with larger machines. Otherwise the Machine Spirit may disobey our commands. But an appeased Machine spirit can push a machine far beyond it's technical limits."

This was a lesson on machine spirits and Cult Mechanicus. Which is so esoteric and labyrinthine that even Martellus may have messed up.

Humanoid computer program is intrgued by your idea of 'machine sprits', good sir. :3

[personal profile] tanks4thememory 2014-07-16 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Hmmm...", Clu said thoughtfully. "Depending on how much time you've got in may be better to hold off on the actual theft for a day; give me some time to do proper recon. Find out where the various cameras and sensors are, and if need be, how we can get into that vault. Though if you're pressed for time, I can probably come up with something on the fly."

Clu looks intrigued, though, at Martellus' explanation of his faith. It sounded like an odd reversal of in-system User worship from what he could tell, though he couldn't be sure without some clarification. "So, these Machine Spirits," he said, "are they anything like the programs who live in a computer system?" Because if they are, Man has he got a surprise for you, big guy?

Are you hitting on me? XD

[personal profile] robotarmsareholy 2014-07-16 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
"We can wait. Patience is important to any strategy."

He looked at the creature as he spoke, tilting his head. "If you speak of artificial intelligences, we consider those works of an obscure, misguided path or of foul Xenos. AIs rebelled long before the coming of the Emperor, and much of that knowledge is lost. Thus why the Codexes are of such interest. Cogitators are... like computers, as you put it, but their programs and such are not machine spirits. Machine Spirits inhabit large machines, the smallest being Land Raiders." He thinks for a moment. "They are about 72 Tonnes and 10.8 meters long. Not even all have Machine Spirits. These can inhabit entire ships, giving them unique personalities all their own. This does not mean that cogitators and other small machines aren't venerated, they simply do not have the unique personalities and abilities that unique machine spirits bring."
tanks4thememory: (Clu with Yes bit)

Maybe, if you're up for a little data-exchange with a hacker. XD

[personal profile] tanks4thememory 2014-07-19 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Clu listened quietly as the other detailed the difference between programs and machine spirits, giving a thoughtful little hum as he processed the data. "Not certain exactly what qualifies as an artificial intelligence," he finally said, "but if they're anything like the MCP- Master Control Program- back home, I can see why you're not especially fond of them."

"As for Machine Spirits only living in larger machines well... I can't say for sure how large the computer I came from was," he said. "I never saw it from the outside. But I know that $flynn_home was a fairly small domain, so it's unlikely to have bee especially large. Encom_511, though, now that was a massive system. Who knows how big it was on the outside?"

He paused, smiling sheepishly. "And I'm probably just confusing you by this point, aren't I?" he asked "Maybe a proper introduction will clear things up; Clu-FA071081, hacking program, at your service." He gave a friendly nod rather than a handshake, since the concept was a bit alien to him yet, and he wasn't sure yet whether the other also used such a gesture as a greeting.
